We discussed last week the importance of adding video content to your associations website.  Today, we’re going to go over the how.  Unlike written content, more goes into video production.  Because of this, it may seem unfeasible to have reoccurring video content at all.  Here are 5 tips to help you in the process:

Don’t over produce: One of the most popular forms of professional videos on YouTube is the video essay.  This is where a presenter prepares a script, and will use shots of him/her speaking, intercut with overlays to exemplify what they are speaking about.  The key with the video essay is it’s simplicity.  A few relevant pictures will suffice.  It doesn’t have to be a Hollywood production to get the message across.

Be genuine: When working out your script for your video essay, make sure to be genuine.  You will have a higher retention rate if the viewer can relate to the person who is presenting.  Don’t be afraid to add character and use personal anecdotes, so long as you have the facts/research to back up what you’re saying.

Be consistent: When cultivating an audience using video content, it’s important to keep to a consistent schedule.  It doesn’t matter if it’s daily, weekly, or monthly; the key is to stick to a schedule.  This will also increase the rate of return visitors to your site.  You might want to start small, with a monthly schedule, then, if you feel like you can handle producing content more frequently, you have that option.

Chose the right platform: There’s no question that YouTube is the largest video hosting website on the web, but there are alternatives that might better fit your needs.  Vimeo offers different ways of restricting content, such as allowing people to only view the video from an embedded website.  Research your options, and chose the one that most closely fits your associations needs.

Utilize social media to get the word out: Now that you’ve created some amazing content, it’s time to get the word out, and the best place to do that is through social media.  Especially if you want to attract younger members into your association, you’ll want to meet them on their turf.  Many potential millennial members who might not otherwise visit your association’s website could be attracted through video content.
